Moving home without the stress

Moving home without the stress

Moving home is well known for being a stressful experience. From the early stages of selling your existing home to calling the electricity company with final meter readings, everything has the possibility of going wrong. Being a founder of Edinburgh’s best value removal company I have considerable experience of moving people and their homes, my aim in this article is to help you avoid the pitfalls of moving home.

The first thing to remember is the most important. Time! Get in touch with removal companies in your local area as soon as possible to obtain quotations for your move, make a booking with your chosen company as early as you can to ensure you get a preferential date for your removal. Make sure the removal company gives you a fixed price and they are fully insured, the last thing you want is for your television to be broken and not get a replacement!

Speaking of insurance, get in contact with your home insurers to either cancel your policy or let them know you’re moving home. Most insurers will be more than happy to provide cover at your new property but make sure you’re covered from the minute you walk in the door of your new home.

Moving home is a great time to declutter. Get rid of the ‘treasures’ that are buried at the back of the wardrobe or the boxes that have been sitting in the loft for the past eight years. If you’re downsizing to a smaller property you might want to consider temporary storage for excess furniture, good removal companies should be able to arrange storage on your behalf. If not get on the phone to local self storage companies as soon as you can.

If you’ve elected to pack your home yourself you should begin packing roughly four weeks before the removal. Make sure everything is clearly labelled and don’t overload boxes, remember removal men are people not supermen. Keep essential items like the kettle and food out until the actual day of your move.

In the final days leading up to your move you should keep in touch with your estate agent and moving company to arrange timings for access to your new home. Contact all the companies who have your current address to tell them your moving home, this includes banks, tax offices, GPs, dentists, cable television companies, phone companies, milk or paper deliveries, DVLA, utility companies. Don’t forget to tell your friends and family your moving home!

A handy service available from the post office is their mail forwarding service which can be set up at any Post Office or by calling Royal Mail themselves.

Finally, leave a note for the new occupiers of your property detailing things like keys, electricity meters and the workings of any built in appliances or things you’re leaving behind.
