SAN FRANCISCO—After years of buildup, preparation and controversy, the Netflix trial of Barry Bonds will finally begin next week. While the former Giants’ slugger has been long suspected of wanting to try the popular service, years of loyalty to his local Blockbuster and the emergence of in-home, on-demand movie rentals have delayed the start of his Netflix trial. Now, however, with his Queue almost officially set, Bonds will receive his first DVD, which is rumored to be Mrs. Doubtfire, in his mailbox as early as next Tuesday. “I know there has been a great deal of talk surrounding this trial,” said baseball’s career home run leader. “It’s just refreshing for it to finally be here. I know many people thought this day would never come, especially after my grocery store put in one of those Redbox machines. But after constantly forgetting to return DVDs and finding out I can get unlimited Netflix movies for about the same cost as just two movie rentals, I figured it’s time to discover the truth—am I a guy who gets his movies in the mail or from a traditional brick and mortar store? That’s what this trial will definitively decide.”
