Episode 007: Greetings from San Francisco and Chihuahuas for Sale!

Jay Wilkinson reviews a “postcard” postcard mailer and the three bad marketing examples vying for a makeover. ———- Hello, I’m Jay Wilkinson and this is Good Bad and Ugly tv where we share street-smart marketing stories. In today’s episode, we’re going to take a quick look at a couple examples submitted by the user community. First up in the Good category is “Greetings from San Francisco” submitted by “Jason M,” who remarks, “Everyone loves to find travel postcards from families and friends in their mailboxes. This company obviously realized that and tried to capture that excitement and enthusiasm for its own marketing piece.” You’ll see that they used a handwriting font for their copy and a real stamp (seen one of those lately?). The personal touches really make the piece look authentic and immediately establishes the company as a friend of the audience. Beyond that, the postcard is promoting an event in San Francisco, so the theme works well with the message. It just goes to show that marketing doesn’t require a big budget or mind-blowing creative to make a positive and memorable impression. Next, in the Bad category, are three misguided screwups that are all in serious need of a marketing makeover. The first is a website for Smith and Goldsmith Rental Properties in Salem, Oregon, submitted by user “nickypoo.” From the colors to the outdated design, this site really takes you back to the ’90s (which in my case is not a good thing.
