Voice mail forwarding and Prepaid roaming

Voice mail forwarding and Prepaid roaming

Voice mail forwarding, also known as tromboning, is two unnecessary international call-legs that occur when a mobile terminated call is forwarded back home while a subscriber is roaming. Early voicemail forwarding occurs when the handset is shut off or when the subscriber requests unconditional forwarding of all incoming calls. Late Call Forwarding for busy/no-answer/not-reachable conditions can be configured to any number and is usually configured to the subscriber’s voice mailbox.

The high cost caused by international tromboning causes many roamers, and mobile network operators, to disable voice mail forwarding when a subscriber travels abroad. Subscribers have even been known to turn off their handsets, which results in a loss of voicemail-generated revenue. Roaming subscribers, unaware of the high cost of voice mail forwarding, often complain to Customer Care about the charges. This wastes operators’ human resources. Some mobile operators solve this issue by absorbing the cost of the trombone, which impacts their bottom line. Passing the cost on to subscribers is now prohibited in the European Union.  Mobile operators who have successfully implemented Starhome’s OVMD (Optimal Voicemail Deposit) solution have eliminated international tromboning, reduced costs and have increased customer satisfaction.

Prepaid roaming subscribers are still not free to use their mobile phones universally wherever they travel.  This restriction on roaming freedom is mainly due to complications in real-time charging.  As a result, prepaid roaming customers have to resort to other ways to make and receive calls, such as buying local prepaid SIM cards in the visited countries, or using calling cards resulting in lost revenue for both the home and visited network operators.  Starhome’s Prepaid Anywhere fillsthe gap, allowing prepaid customers to seamlessly make calls and use VAS (value added services) as they roam internationally, providing the same end-user experience as postpaid roamers receive.
