A feature somewhat like that was added in Lion (I recorded this video in Snow Leopard). If you have Lion or above, check out System Preferences > Universal Access > Seeing > Zoom > Zoom in window > Options… > Enable temporary zoom.

isn’t there a setting so that wherever the mouse is pointing to is enlarged as though with a magnifying glass, so you hover over what you’d like magnified? that’s what i came here seeking.
